Ebook About
Inspired by Sri Atmananda (Krishna Menon), the Direct Path is a “pathless path.” It simply articulates the being of you and the world as loving, open, clear awareness. If this truth is realized as your experience, then nothing need be done. The path disappears, and life is lived in sweetness and celebration! But if there are still questions or doubts, the Direct Path contains unique and powerful resources that stabilize this truth as your everyday reality. This is a revised edition of the book, expanded to add chapters on the Direct Path in addition to its selection of dialogs from a decade of “Nondual Dinner” gatherings. The first three chapters unfold the basics of the Direct Path, such as standing as awareness, being in love with awareness, and exploring awareness. Included are several experiments that help establish your everyday experience as awareness, always and already. The dialogs cover questions such as the desire for enlightenment experiences, the relationship between the brain and awareness, the question of “nondually correct” language, the belief in physical and mental objects, the idea of having a sage’s experience, and more.

Book Standing as Awareness: The Direct Path Review :

In a nutshell, this book provides a convincing case for claiming that nothing exists at all without pure awareness (consciousness); just "being" is awareness. Boundless and dimensionless, awareness is behind all human phenomenon including sensations, thoughts, space, time feelings, ideas, smells, touch, sight, and sound. When any of these phenomenon occur, they are called "arisings" and are not real without awareness. Awareness is portrayed as the unseen seer; it is all that there is.You feel like you are an observer beholding an external world. There is no "I", or "me" or "you" as traditionally understood. Awareness is the "I". "I" emerges from awareness and refers back to awareness: it is self referencing. There is no separate "I's" because awareness is not divisible. You, as awareness, has no location and time has no meaning. The paragraphs above capture just a few of the interesting topics discussed in this book. It takes you into a another world very different from the one you are accustomed to; and it could hold "the answer" to all of our quiet searching. It is a good read on the subject of nonduality.Rich
Goode makes it quite clear that literally *everything* is seen though the subjective lens of our "awareness", including our-'selves'. Therefore if we exist at all, we are just a concept meaning this awareness, not our body or mind. In addition, there can be no objective proof of/for anything, since everything is subjective. A framework for objectivity (e.g. the scientific method) is a concept built in awareness. Other authors use different words for this nondual concept - Balsekar used "consciousness", Spira uses "experience", etc. These words carry slightly different meanings and therefore imply, through connotation, different aspects of our existence through their choice of words. Like any new vocabulary word, it is useful to try to create a distinct concept in your mind for what Goode is talking about. After reading Goode's work, I tend to explain it in sensory terms. We think (or more precisely, are taught that) we have 5 senses, but we really have limitless sensory capabilities. Our own thoughts, memories, knowledge, emotions and other experiences are just labels that we have slapped onto different things that 'we' experience. As an example exercise, 'think' about 'thoughts' that 'come to mind' - realize that this is no different from smelling a scent or seeing a color! In Goode's terms, it appears to your awareness, as does everything. It becomes clear that during our 'socialization' within society, our sensory complex (again, a concept in awareness, and therefore simply awareness) developed the ability to works in terms of labels and concepts, not the stuff of raw images, sounds, smells, and so forth. This would be what J. Krishnamurti liked to call our "conditioning", and why he suggested to really 'listen' (fall back to the raw input of Goode's 'awareness' outside the realm of concepts, the only place where the ineffable truth can be). Now you can become aware of the concepts that arise! Anything I can say about how powerful this is would be an understatement. At this point you realize that there seems to be some control you can have over the concepts you experience, because you become aware of how you learn them. Each concept in itself is kind of like a radio that's attuned to different sensory experiences - for instance you learn hunger as a set of sensations. Everything is like that. I also recommend Goode's "The Direct Path" which explores all aspects of awareness with exercises. You learn, for instance, that an 'orange' is this concept you place on the sights, smells, tastes of 'orange'. An orange is nothing else. Fantastic stuff. Each one of these concepts becomes a 'sense'. One way I like to think of it is : we have a 'sense' for every concept we've learned plus our ineffable non-conceptualized senses (some of which we've associated with concepts, and most we probably haven't).This review extrapolates quite a distance from the topics Goode discusses (in particular, I have created new conceptualizations to explain his ideas, whereas his work is, by contrast, somewhat deconstructive). You may experience completely different realizations of your own! I highly recommend this work; it is so powerful in its simplicity. To explore further, consider "As One Is" by J. Krishnamurti, "The Social Construction of Reality" by Berger and Luckmann, and of course other works on nonduality, Advaita Vedanta, and so forth.
